Characters in The Sunstone Brooch

When I start plotting a new book, I search for images that represent the characters and setting in the story. This is what I have so far.

An image of Teddy Roosevelt in 1884 when he escaped to The Badlands to recover from the grief of losing his wife and mother within hours of each other on the same day in 1884. He goes to The Badlands to hunt and write the first of his many books.

And the heroes of The Sunstone, The Bloodstone, The Moonstone, and The Bluestone Brooch are…

You may recognize these men but for me, they are Tavis Stuart (top left), James Cullen Fraser (top right), Austin O’Grady (bottom left), and Remy Benoit (bottom right).

Which one will Ensley fall in love with?

Teddy Roosevelt

And what about the ladylove?

Well, here is 28-year-old Ensley MacAndrew Williams. She is a Harvard grad with a double major in English Lit and American History. She grew up on a ranch on the edge of the Badlands in North Dakota and is currently an editor at a New York City book publishing house. She and JC were friends and classmates but never had any interest in dating. Her parents died, and she recently sold the North Dakota family ranch.

The setting… The Badlands, North Dakota.

The chart of everyone’s age, likeness of the characters and the forthcoming stones make me more excited about future books.

Teddy Roosevelt will he be gold mining?? Love that part of history. Sam Huegan and Gerrard Butler also figure into my dream as characters of your books.

I can totally see Gerard Butler as David McBain!
Question… Will the original core characters (Elliott, Kit, Braham, Cullen, David, Jack, Charlott, etc.) still have pivotal roles in the upcoming books?

Oh wow. I’m already to start reading this new adventure. I am stretching out the Topaz to milk every word out of the story. I could have finished it three days ago but am limiting how much I allow my self to indulge each reading session. I like the direction you have taken so far on the next story Just nuggets but already taking root. You never loose a character. Just hide them for a session or two and sneak them back in. Continue to do what you do best and I will continue to enjoy the fruits of your… Read more »

I love this series and I tried going slow but… I was always anxious for the characters and needed to ensure they were safe. I know you look after them, they’re like family to me too. Thank you so much for writing them.

Hi, Katherine. I just finished The Topaz Brooch and it was nice to come back here and see your visuals for the next book. Have you done this before and I can’t find it? I would love to see a photo representation of how you view each character when you write (I.e. for the characters in all the previous books I love so much). Thank you!

I have loved all your books and eagerly await the Sunstone Brooch. Have you thought about setting one during the American Revolution. I know you used Thomas Jefferson, but not anything set during a battle of the American Revolution. I am a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution so I find that era and family history very interesting. I have at least 10 ancestors that fought in the American Revolution and one woman who hid American soldiers in her haystack for days after they escaped from the British.

Hi Katherine– I have read all of your Brooch series and loved them all, some more than others, but everyone is a winner!! Finished the Topaz Brooch in a week-end because I could not put it down and can’t wait for the next one. The new series sounds thrilling and those books will be exciting to read too. Why hasn’t anyone ever approached you to do a television series(like Outlander) based on your books and the wonderful characters in them and the incredible experiences that this family has gone through and still stayed intact and loving and strong. I love… Read more »

I love, love, love this series. After this series, I hope you have more great books in store for us hungry readers. Since I discovered the first Book, The Ruby Brooch, I have devoured each and every book as soon as I can find them on Amazon. I would keep my Amazon account for these books only if necessary. This is the first I’ve visited your website, and to find likenesses of these heroes will be an even greater joy now and I read — I’d take any one of them any day!!! They would not take my 68 year… Read more »

so I have read and listened to all the books so far, I Love the series, my only disappointment was the change in the reader for the last 2 books, and then having a man and a woman read in the topaz book, it was OK but the reader you first did a much better job.

Oh no! Audio books are the only thing that I look forward to on my drive to and from work! Sometimes I just keep on driving around till I get to a part where everyone is safe!

I’m very sad about this news. How can fans help?

Hi Katherine, I just want to tell you that I can’t wait for your next book to come out. I have all the rest of the series and I listen to them over and over again. Each time I pick up on something that slipped past me the time before and makes the whole story, book 1 to book 10, even better. Please keep the stories coming! And just a hint . . . I loved the humor and jokes in the world war two action!

I love your series. When I saw your last book had been releases, I went back to listen to all the books all over again in anticipation of listening to The Sun stone Broach. I, like several others in the blog am disappointed to hear The Sun stone Broach wont be put into audio. I hope this is reconsidered.
I would love to see it as a tv series.
